Camp Tonkawa
Wilderness Awareness Learning Center

Welcome to Camp Tonkawa

Camp Tonkawa has received our 501c3 Non profit stats. Any donations are greatly appreciated and we can give a tax deductable receipt upon request. We are a Nature Awareness Learning Center for Children and Adults that was founded by the Holtzman Family. The camp gives a great "hands on" experience in the great outdoors. It is located on a 35 acre tract of land about an hour drive north of Dallas Texas.

We offer a great range of classes and camps for all ages. Check out our Calendar for our upcoming schedule of classes and camps. We also can create camps and classes for groups as needed.

Our mission is to reconnect mankind with nature with our "hands on" teaching of ancient Native American skills of nature awareness and primitive wilderness survival.

The Camp Tonkawa property is a certified wildlife refuge. Our woods of oak and junipers have plenty of trails, a small creek, fishing pond, swimming pond, pasture, organic garden, barn and a long house.

Camp Tonkawa News

Wow the Girl Scouts are on Fire!!!  We had representatives from 4 different Cadette troops out for the Primitive Survival One Camp Jan 16-17, 2010. (Plus one brave Boy Scout.)  Great shelters were built, and three bow drill fires were started!!! It was awesome to see such enthusiastic young people, learning life skills that boost self esteem like nothing else can.  They all plan to return for the Primitive Survival Two Camp, either February 20-21, or September 18-19, of this year.  One of the troops went home and organized a survival event for their service unit to complete the requirements for their Outdoor Survival Interest Project!

By the way this Camp sparked so much interest with the Girl Scouts that another Primitive Survival One Camp has been added this spring, May 15-16.  You do not have to be a scout, or even come with your troop to join us.  The fall camp is not until August 14-15.

Thank you to all the families and individuals who have been coming out to lead a hand feeding and caring for the horses over these winter months.  Volenteering to help is open to anyone who has taken our Horsemanship Day Camp, or any of the Spring and Summer Horse Camps.  After horse work is done, we let you ride and enjoy the horses.  The Horsemanship Day Camps are scheduled once a month, or arrange a special day for your Homeschool or Scout Group.

This is the Spurlin / Kocher Family who not only have donated their time but have also donated senior feed, and new grooming tools.  Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you.

Girl Scout Troop 591, has been coming to Camp Tonkawa since they were brownies. Started out with our Horsemanship Day Camp and now come to camp twice a year, earning different outdoor badges, always adding horse time to their camps.

Claudia and Glen Heltne volunteer at least once a month doing maintenance projects here at the camp.  Trimming trails, clearing cedar saplings, helping with the chickens and in the organic vegetable garden.  Their helping hands and happy hearts have truly been a blessing but this winter they went beyond the call of duty when they came to reorganize and clean out the Longhouse, our campbs storage building.  Wow it not only looks great but we now can locate what we need with ease.  Thank you for all that you have done for the camp.

Scouts, 4Hber, Homeschool Groups or families who want to do service out at Camp Tonkawa would be glady be accomidated.

Madisun Holtzman is now officially taking on the Computer end of the camp.  This means that the Web site  NEWS section will be updated more often, so look for your pictures if you visited the camp recently.  Plus he will be keeping the content of the web site current, dates, new camps, etc.

April Holtzman will still be monitoring the emails, and sending out upcoming camp notices
