Length of Time: Camp begins on Saturday morning at 9:30a.m. and goes through Sunday 2:30 p.m.
Class Description
The Audubon Society is a National organization, Camp Tonkawa has made arrangements with members of this group to lead a camp all about birds. They have taught both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts on Bird Study, along with many other seminars. Camp Tonkawa staff will be there to add the games, songs, and craft to the week-end. Together we'll all have a dynamite time learning about those two legged, feathered creatures.
Topics to be covered:
- Become familiar with the correct terms of the birds body parts
- Journal birds - sketch and field observations
- Learn how to use field guides
- Understand range maps - breeding range, winter range, migration paths
- Find out about the Audubon Society's Christmas Bird Count
- Bird Habitats
- Properly use and care for binoculars
- Language of the birds
- What to do with injured birds
- Bird Conservation
- Methods to invite birds to your garden
Each camper will need to bring a sketch book, pencils, and if possible binoculars along with any birding books that they have. Plus your own camping gear ie, tent, sleeping bag, plate, bowl, mug, eating utensils, and lunches. Dinner Saturday and Breakfast Sunday will be provided. Camp chairs and flashlights are optional but nice to have.

NOTE: This class meets the requirements for:
- Cadette & Senior Girl Scout Interest Project All About Birds
- Boy Scout Merit Badge Bird study
We have a swimming pond, so bring provisions to enjoy.
NOTE : All classes have a minimum number of registrants to make or sorry to say it will be cancelled. So bring your friends and tell everyone you know. Some classes are listed but are not currently on the schedule for the upcoming year. If your group has an interest we can schedule a date for you.
